Modern luxury combined with a touch of Alpine coziness and stunning mountain views – this is what awaits you at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel in Switzerland! The perfect place to stay in Zermatt in any season.

Staying at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel this summer has been an incredible experience. Not only did we actually see the famous Matterhorn mountain this time 😉 (if you remember from our previous Zermatt trip it was barely visible due to the clouds), this time we had this amazing view all to ourselves from our gorgeous room facing the Matterhorn.
If you are looking for a great place to stay for your Swiss vacation, I highly recommend it. It offers an absolutely gorgeous view and it is, by far, one of Zermatt’s (and Switzerland’s) most Instagramable hotels.
In this post, I am sharing all about what’s it like to stay at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel and our experience during the 4 days there.
Note: This is NOT a sponsored post. We pay for all our travels and accommodations ourselves. I’m sharing with you guys our experiences and the best hotels we stay at to inspire and help you make the most of your holidays. 🙂
Staying at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel in Zermatt

I was so incredibly excited to come back to Zermatt this summer and stay at this hotel.
We spotted it during our trip last year and I had my eye on it for our upcoming winter holiday. Since the weather was pretty bad during our 2 days trip in July, we knew we wanted to come back and experience Zermatt and all its beautiful hikes in the area.
We booked the hotel for a few days in early December but had to cancel our stay last minute due to the pandemic. Can’t even begin to tell you how disappointing it was, but we decided to come back the following summer.
(Have a look here for the best things to do in Zermatt in summer).
The Matterhorn FOCUS Design is a gorgeous hotel, beautifully designed and very welcoming. It is the perfect place to relax, unwind and pamper yourself in a stylish, modern yet cozy atmosphere.

The Location
You will find the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel in a quiet area of Zermatt, a little bit further uphill. It is located slightly away from the city center but close enough to feel the village vibe. You can reach the famous Kirchbrüke in a 10-minute walk.
I love this area of Zermatt! You are surrounded by chalets and hotels, and being higher up in the village ensures the PERFECT view of the Matterhorn.
The entrance is pretty exciting already: you walk through a short tunnel under the mountain and take the elevator up to the hotel’s reception.
Another great advantage of its location is that the cable car for the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is right next door!

The Welcome at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel

Everything you would expect from a 4-star, luxury hotel: a very warm and comfortable welcome. The hotel’s shuttle was waiting for us at the train station (Zermatt is a car-free village) and within 5 minutes we had already arrived.
We were warmly greeted (by name!) by the lovely receptionist, offered a welcome drink, and invited to relax in the lounge area. Shortly after we received a tour of the hotel and were guided to our room. The whole check-in process was pretty fast.
I loved enjoying a glass of wine in the cozy living room overlooking the pool. In the lounge, there is also a spacious fireplace area. I can only imagine how lovely this place is in winter. Relaxing here with a hot chocolate in your hand and a good book after a day of skiing sounds simply perfect.

The Rooms
We booked a room with a Matterhorn view and I couldn’t wait to see the mountain from our balcony!
All Deluxe Double rooms are facing the Matterhorn, from different angles, so you are guaranteed a great view of the majestic mountain. So you can snuggle up in bed with your partner are simply take in that gorgeous view all day long.
These rooms are of course a little pricey-er than the regular ones but totally worth it. (expect to pay an extra 100 CHF for the view).
As you would expect from a boutique hotel, the rooms are elegant and stylish, with modern decor accents. I’d say the entire hotel has an industrial feel to it – concrete grey walls, black lines, and accessories. Yet warmth is brought in through cozy cow leather chairs or sled-shaped lounge chairs at the pool, giving it an Alpine chalet feel.

One of my favorite features of the room was the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can admire the Matterhorn from every spot. From the bed, the couch, or even the bathtub! 🙂 As a design hotel feature, the bathroom itself also has transparent windows (almost) all around. Curtains are available though for those of us who like a little more privacy. 😉
I loved to see the handwritten note on the coffee table welcoming us to the hotel as well as the Swiss chocolates and fresh mountain water.
TRAVEL TIP: In Switzerland, and especially in the mountain villages, tap water is safe to drink and it’s probably one of the best in Europe.
You can explore the different room options and designs HERE.
The View

I used to think that we don’t necessarily need to have a spectacular view from the hotel room, as we spend most of the day outside anyway.
But trust me, nothing beats waking up to the sight of the Matterhorn each morning! Or staying up late with a warm tea on the balcony watching the sunset and the night slowly covering the famous mountain.
At this hotel, The Matterhorn views differ per room as the angles can be different. At first, ours had a gorgeous view from the bed which was facing directly towards the Matterhorn.
The only inconvenience was an old electricity tower in front of us. It was completely covering the mountain, so we asked to change the room. I am so grateful for the flexibility of the reception team, who immediately got it sorted despite the rearrangements they had to do.
(The tower started being demolished during our stay, so it won’t be an inconvenience for future travelers).
Our next room had an angled view of the mountain (we would see it on the left side of the bed) and it was perfect! It also seemed slightly larger than the other one so it was very comfortable.
The Breakfast

An indulging breakfast was waiting for us every morning and was one of my favorite parts of the day. 🙂
I always tend to “judge” hotels on whether they serve smoked salmon and freshly squeezed orange juice and the Matterhorn FOCUS didn’t disappoint. At least on the salmon side. Maybe the juice will be there next time ;). Of course, there are plenty of juices to choose from, including orange, I just prefer those squeeze-on-the-spot machines.
There are many options for a savory or sweet breakfast (even macarons!), served in a beautiful and stylish setting.
TIP: make sure to try the Ovomaltine chocolate spread (the Nutella of Switzerland), it’s SO good!
The hotel does not have a restaurant, so you need to go out for lunch and dinner. Every afternoon a small buffet is available in the lounge area with sandwiches, fruits, pies, and tea, complimentary for the guests.
The Spa

One of the most beautiful and stylish indoor pools in Zermatt can be found here at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design hotel!
It is the perfect place to relax after a long hike or day on the slopes. Needless to say, it quickly became one of my favorite spots in the hotel. 😉
I love that the water was pretty warm so there was no need to get used to the temperature. This is likely because the pool is not meant for swimming laps (it has a round shape) but more for relaxation.
It continues outside where you can relax and enjoy the jacuzzi section in the fresh mountain air. It faces the other side of the mountain, but from a certain corner, you can spot a little bit of the Matterhorn too.
In the spa, there is also a Finish sauna and Saline bath, but we avoided the areas since it was a no-textile section.
You can also enjoy a relaxing massage or other treatments as well. If you are curious to see more and book a treatment, you can do so HERE.
Checking Out From The Matterhorn Focus Design Hotel
The checkout was just as smooth as the check-in. We were done in just a few minutes and the shuttle was ready to take us to the train station.
You can also choose to have your luggage delivered to the station at a certain time while you take a final stroll through the village. This is such a great alternative.
Of course, the hotel also stores the luggage next to the reception in case you want to take advantage of the extra day and come back to pick it up.
Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a relaxing stay in a modern, stylish yet cozy place, then I cannot recommend this hotel enough!
I loved the special attention of the full team in making us feel as comfortable as possible. From the generous smiles whenever they met us, to accommodating our room change, to the goodbye gift (FOCUS water for the road). It made our stay at the Matterhorn FOCUS Design Hotel a truly unforgettable one!
If I’ve inspired you to give it a try, you can book your holiday directly on the hotel’s website or via Booking.com.
We will definitely come back again! After all, we haven’t seen Zermatt in winter yet! 😉
I hope this post was useful for planning your trip to Zermatt and finding the best places to stay.
Our Switzerland trip didn’t end here. The next stop was Grindelwald and I can’t wait to tell you all about it! New posts coming soon!
