Here are the best tips for sensitive skin care you need to know, for an optimal skincare routine. From skincare professionals.

Here’s to us, the “lucky” ones, proud owners of SENSITIVE SKIN! 🙂
Since you’re here, I’m guessing you’re one of us too and you’re looking for ways to help you soothe, calm, and take good care of your skin. Cool, keep on reading!
Having sensitive skin – whether it’s on the face, or all over the body – doesn’t make our lives easy. The redness, dryness, the flakey-ness are just some of the nasty things we have to deal with every day.
But with a few tips and advice from skincare professionals, we can definitely get it right and have that beautiful, glowing, healthy skin we all dream of.
And when I say skincare professionals, I’m talking about the advice I received from several cosmeticians (in 2 different countries, all recommending the same products) to the advice I got from consulting a dermatologist.
7 Sensitive Skin Care Tips You Need To Know
Here are the most important things you need to know for taking good care of your sensitive skin:
1. Cleanse your skin with gentle products
Use soft, milky cleansers (make-up removers) for your daily skincare routine. Both am and pm.
Place a few drops on the tip of your fingers and gently massage it in. You can remove the product with a soft cotton bud or simply leave it on.
You can also use micellar water specifically designed for sensitive skin. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE Bioderma Sensibio and have been using it for years! It is by far the best micellar water I’ve tried (and I tried many of them!). It’s the only one that I found to clean my skin properly while not drying it at all.
They have a full range of products dedicated to sensitive skin conditions such as rosacea or dehydrated skin. I’ve tried them all and highly recommend them. It’s the only cleanser you need.

(this isn’t a sponsored post, by the way, I simply love this product and I’ve been using it religiously, so thought I’d share).
Oh, since we’re talking about cleansing – whether you have sensitive skin or not, make sure to ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP BEFORE BED. This is one of the worst skincare mistakes women make and it’s so DAMAGING for the skin.
2. Apply thermal water after cleansing
I’ve seen this trick in a beauty routine of a celebrity a few years ago and have incorporated it into my own morning skincare routine ever since.
Every morning, after I have cleaned my face, I apply a refreshing mist of thermal water to my face. It feels like I’m giving my skin an extra boost of hydration!
Thermal water is known to have incredible benefits, especially for sensitive skin. Here are some of them:
- soothes, hydrates, and tones the skin
- calms irritations
- reduces skin inflammations
- it’s naturally rich in minerals, with scientifically demonstrated antioxidant properties
Applying a cold, thermal water mist, especially in summer, it’s a great way to refresh and calm your skin at the same time. Also a great feeling for a hot day.
I use this one from La Roche Posay and have been very happy with it for years.
How to use thermal water?
Step1. Apply the mist 8-12 inches from your face and let dry for 2-3 minutes. (I’m not always very patient so I just wait a few seconds).
Step2. Gently pat dry the excess water with a soft towel or cotton bud, without rubbing.
3. Use sunscreen with SPF30 or higher
This is one of the tips I got from my dermatologist: no matter what skincare products you use, expensive or affordable, what MATTERS MOST in your skincare routine is to USE SUNSCREEN DAILY.
It should have SPF30 or higher and it doesn’t matter whether it’s included in your moisturizer or as a separate product.
My go-to sunscreen is the La Roche Posay ANTHELIOS SPF30. It’s very soft, hydrating, and smells absolutely divine!
You should also avoid those damaging rays of the sun directly on your face, so make sure you protect your skin by wearing a hat in summer.
4. Use gentle products, adequate for your skin type

Maybe you’d say this is a no-brainer but I thought it’s good to mention either way as it’s important to use the right products for our skin.
What is the best skincare for sensitive skin?
The brand that has been recommended to me by multiple skincare professionals (in 2 different countries) is La Roche Posay.
I have sensitive skin with a little bit of rosacea on my cheeks so I’ve been using their Rosaliac range (serum + face cream for dry skin).
Let me tell you, I have tried multiple products to help reduce rosacea appearance, and this combination was THE BEST OF ALL. After a few weeks, I noticed a redness reduction and my skin was perfectly hydrated (no more flakey skin!)
What should I avoid if I have sensitive skin?
5. Avoid using toners
This was also one of the recommendations from my dermatologist and one of the tips for sensitive skin I hear very often.
Using toners, especially alcohol-based ones can be harsh on your skin, so there is no need to include them in your routine.
Rely on the thermal water for refreshing and toning your skin.
6. Avoid exfoliating your sensitive skin
One of the tips for sensitive skin from my dermatologist was to stop using exfoliants.
These products can be harsh and abrasive on your skin and can cause irritations.
If you feel like you really must exfoliate, do some research upfront to find gentle products that are specifically formulated and safe to use on sensitive skin.
7. Avoid hot showers, baths, saunas – anything with hot steam
Hot water and steam can cause redness, itching and can disrupt the skin’s natural protective layer.
So no more hot showers or baths, keep them lukewarm and short. (I know, it sucks, who doesn’t love a hot bath once in a while?!)
If you have rosacea, like me, it’s also advised to avoid cosmetic treatments that involve steam on your face, saunas, and other fun things like that…
So here are my top 7 sensitive skin care tips I swear by and apply every day in my beauty routine. What about you? I’d be happy to hear some of the ways you take care of your sensitive skin.
